What is IOESS?

IOESS, which was founded in Maryland, began operations with the goal of assisting immigrants in all aspects of their lives. The nonprofit began by focusing on services such as English as a Second Language (ESL), college preparation, driving knowledge test preparation, college visits, and job search aid within Maryland, but has now expanded to include fresh territories such as Washington DC, Virginia, and Missouri. While the services are provided in these specific places, assistance is provided to immigrants throughout the United States. Regardless of where you're located, if you require any of our services, we are committed to helping you achieve your goals.

Our Story

On August 16, 2021, Afghan immigrant Bilal Wali was preparing for his internship at a resettlement agency when he learned of the Afghan government's collapse. As evacuees flooded the agency, Bilal felt compelled to do more for those facing the same challenges he once did, That evening, he gathered with other who shared his vision and founded the organization in Maryland.

To build a strong foundation, Bilal assembled a board of seasoned nonprofit leaders, bringing together up to 17 years of expertise in areas such as development, social work, education, and women's rights. The organization initially focused on offering English as a Second Language (ESL) classes but has since grown to provide a wide range of services designed to help immigrants successfully resettle and thrive in their new communities.
